Correspondence re: U.S. Marshal vs. Crawley P. Dake, 1881, 1884-1888 (bulk 1884-1888).

Summary: Photocopies of letters concerning the attempts to raise money to reimburse the government in the case of U.S. Marshal's Office vs. Crawley P. Dake, dated 1881-1888. The only letter from 1881 is from the U.S. Attorney authorizing Dake to arrest outlaws. The other letters are between the attorneys representing the case in Washington, D.C. and Arizona; most of the letters are written to E.P. Clark, one of the sureties of Dake's bond. The attorneys include Brewster Cameron and A. J. Falls. Other correspondents include R. H. Walker, M H. Sherman, Abel S. Dungan, Col. Zabriskie, and A. Bean. A few letters mention attempts to locate Wyatt and Virgil Earp to get vouchers for their expenses while assisting Marshal Dake and testimony provided by Joe Evans against Dake. The actual testimony is not present.
